FAQ

I want to be a mentor, how do I volunteer? The first step to becoming a mentor is to attend a mentor introduction session. These sessions are held every Tuesday evening at 6:00pm at our office. Contact Christina Abu-Judom, Volunteer Manager, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or (602) 258-1012 to register.

How much time does it take to mentor a child or teen? The time required varies according to the program in which you mentor. The time commitment ranges from a minimum of 1-4 hours per week.

What does it cost to mentor? As a volunteer mentor we ask that you give of your time not your money.  Our organization covers all costs associated to the screening process.

Does it take any special skills to mentor? No special skills are required as we offer training before you are matched to a young person in our program. The people who often make the biggest impact in our lives are those with no special skills but big hearts! Anyone from the community that meets the program eligibility requirements can become a mentor to a youth.

How am I matched to a child? Our skilled Program Managers are prepared to gather your preferences on making aspects of matching you to a youth including but not limited to geographic location, age, behaviors and interests. We work very closely with all mentors to ensure that the best match is made.

Do the kids choose to be in the program? Each youth meets individually with our Program Manager to determine their eligibility and interest level. The youth share why they would benefit from having a mentor. The Program Manager then determines whether a youth is accepted into the program.

What happens if my "mentee" and I don't get along?
As mentioned our Program Managers are skilled in ensuring the best possible match is found for each mentor. If for any reason the match is deemed as "not a fit" our Program Manager is there to support this situation.

How can I help if I don't want to mentor? We have many opportunities for volunteers to support our organization. Our Volunteer Manager can support you in deciding the best fit for you during your screening process.

As a parent, how can I get a mentor for my child? If your child is between the ages of 14 and 17, you can contact our office at 602.258.1012 to place your child on our waiting list for the next program start date.

Where do mentors come from and what are the screening steps for mentors? Our volunteer mentors come from many areas of the community, are all ages and have a desire to support a young person in a mentoring relationship. Each volunteer is determined a safe and appropriate fit to be a mentor through many screening steps including a personal interview, fingerprint background check,  motor vehicle check, and personal references.
